Vancouver, BC – British Columbia’s Clean Tech CEO Alliance and Independent Power Producers Association has launched CleanWorks BC, a new brand and marketing campaign to promote the $100 billion investment opportunity in British Columbia’s clean energy and clean technology and services sectors.

“British Columbia has a wealth of clean, renewable resources and the third largest clean technology cluster in the world with top-ranked universities and companies, world-class research facilities and technical and entrepreneurial talent,” said Jonathan Rhone, President and CEO of Nexterra Systems Corp. and Chair of BC’s Clean Tech CEO Alliance. “CleanWorks BC will help us attract the financial capital and investors, companies and human capital to position BC as a clean energy powerhouse in the global economy.”

CleanWorks BC was initiated in October 2009 and is a partnership led by BC’s Clean Tech CEO Alliance, the Independent Power Producers Association of BC (IPPBC), the BC Technology Industry Association (BCTIA) and their member companies. It is actively supported by the Province of British Columbia, the Vancouver Economic Development Commission and the University of British Columbia.

“CleanWorks BC is unique,” said Rhone. “This is the first time in BC and all of Canada that our sectors have come together under one banner to promote the jobs, investment, economic growth and diversification that will come from winning the global competition for clean energy and clean technologies, with BC resources, technology and know-how.”

The partnership will conduct a unified marketing and business development campaign under the CleanWorks BC brand. It was launched during the 2010 Olympic Games in front of an international audience at the Government of British Columbia’s Climate Action and Clean Energy Reception on February 15. The two-year campaign will include traditional media, online and social media and other marketing tools to promote British Columbia’s clean energy and clean energy technology and services sectors to target audiences in key jurisdictions.

CleanWorks BC estimates these sectors are a $100 billion opportunity for the BC economy.  This includes renewable energy development and clean fuels like natural gas; the manufacturing of clean energy technologies like generation solutions, clean transportation, small grid systems and energy efficiency products; as well as professional services like planning, design, engineering and construction of low carbon buildings and infrastructure.

  • BC’s clean power sector consists of some 100 companies, with more than $15 billion in projects ready for active development. And BC is rich in natural gas, an increasingly sought after transition fuel that can reduce greenhouse gases in the transportation and power generation industries.
  • BC is home to hundreds of clean technology companies – some of the fastest growing businesses in the province – employing thousands and generating billions in revenue.
  • Clean energy technology companies are part of a larger Cleantech and environmental industry and services sector, which includes over a thousand BC firms with nearly 20,000 employees.

Together BC’s clean energy and clean energy technology and services sectors are a multi-billion dollar industry that could generate tens of thousands of green collar jobs for British Columbians by 2020. These sectors export their goods and services and are well positioned to reach some of the fastest growing global markets.

“In British Columbia, we have a unique opportunity to create tens of thousands of new jobs and attract billions of new investment to the province through the growth of our clean energy and clean energy technology and services sectors,” said Harvie Campbell, Executive Vice President of Pristine Power and Chair of the IPPBC. “CleanWorks BC will help us deliver a strong message to global enterprises and investors that BC is at the forefront of the new low carbon economy and is open for business.”

Clean energy is one of the fastest growing industries in the world with an annual growth rate of 30 per cent since 2001. Fuelled largely by rising demand for clean and alternative energy sources and greenhouse gas reductions, investment in clean energy totaled $155 billion worldwide in 2008.
