TORONTO, ON — In a North-American debut, DHL Express Canada launched today its GOGREEN service, "carbon-neutral" shipping that enables Canadian businesses of all sizes to offset the carbon involved in shipping their goods internationally. The service is available from anywhere in Canada to more than 220 countries around the world. In 2008 alone, DHL's GOGREEN service offset 16,200 tonnes of CO2, the equivalent of planting 90,000 trees.

"What makes the GOGREEN service unique and appealing to Canadian businesses is the ability and simplicity it provides local companies to manage, monitor and offset their carbon footprint, all in a seamless automated process," said Mathieu Floreani, President, DHL Express Canada.

To provide a carbon-neutral shipment, DHL calculates to the nearest gram the carbon emissions generated by transporting each customer's shipment from country of origin to destination. DHL then offsets these emissions by reinvesting in certified carbon management programs such as reforestation and alternative energy projects. These carbon-offset credits are issued directly to the companies that use GOGREEN via a carbon offset certificate. The carbon offset and credit process is monitored and verified by Société Général de Surveillance SA (SGS), an independent certification organization.

DHL's GOGREEN is the first in a series of environmentally friendly initiatives the company is planning to introduce. As part of its ongoing commitment to climate protection and environmental sustainability, DHL Express Canada has recently undergone an extensive re-routing exercise in an effort to maximize fuel efficiency for the entire DHL fleet of vehicles in Canada. Additionally, the company is working with environmental protection organizations to further its ecological investments in Canadian foresting and land-protection projects.
